  ZX Spectrum 128K - A Brujabit game

[ ENGLISH ]

Version 1.0.0 (1/11/2026)

WHAT IS IT
----------
The Final Exam is a school adventure for the ZX Spectrum 128K (also
+2), in English and Spanish (selectable in the menu). You are Eric
(or one of the other selectable students: Tomas, Sofi, Nacho, with
your own name). Biff has stolen your notes, the final exam is coming
and the school clock never stops: classes last 3 minutes and breaks
1 minute. Go to the right classroom, sit at your desk, avoid the
teachers' demerits... and find a way to pass.

The school has three floors, staircases, eleven classrooms, a staff
room, library, music room, theatre, basketball court and the
headmaster's office. There are three teachers (Ramos, Diaz and
Skinner) and the stern headmaster Strickland. Two different endings.

TRIBUTE TO SKOOL DAZE
---------------------
This game is a heartfelt tribute to SKOOL DAZE (Microsphere, 1984),
created by David Reidy and Keith Warrington, which brought us so much
joy when we were kids. All credit for the original idea belongs to
them. The Final Exam is an UNOFFICIAL, NON-COMMERCIAL fan tribute. It
is not affiliated with or endorsed by the original authors or rights
holders, and it does not use their code or graphics.

HOW TO LOAD
-----------
Files:
  The_Final_Exam_v1.0.0.tap - tape image (128K loader)
  The_Final_Exam_v1.0.0.sna - 128K snapshot (instant load)
Emulator (Fuse, ZEsarUX, Spectaculator, etc.): set the machine to
Spectrum 128K or +2 and open the .tap (or the .sna). On Fuse use
File > Open, or enable auto-load. Real hardware: load the .tap with a
TZXDuino/CASDuino, DivMMC or similar, using "Tape Loader" from the
128K menu (or LOAD "" in 128 BASIC). 48K machines are NOT supported.

MENU
----
1 Character (choose student and type a name: letters, 0 = delete,
  ENTER = OK)   2 Controls   3 Language (English/Spanish)
4 Sound on/off 5 Play 6 Goal

CONTROLS (from the in-game Controls screen)
--------
  O / P left / right
  Q / A stairs up / down
  SPACE run
  J jump
S sit down / stand up
  F push
  N notes (view)
  G goals (view)
  Kempston joystick is also supported.
Inside the Notes screen (N), key 1 exits to the main menu (asks for
confirmation Y/N); any other key returns to the game.

GOALS
-----
A: Collect the school shields so Biff gives your notes back. Jump
    (J) under a shield to grab it; the HUD shows your count.
B: Revealed later in the game (no spoilers!). The Goals screen (G)
and your Notes (N) always show what to do next.
C: Don't reach 40 demerits, or headmaster Strickland expels you.

DEMERITS (some of them)
-----------------------
Jumping in class in front of the teacher: 5. Running in front of a
teacher: 5. Not sitting down in class: 5. Being out of class or
skipping it: 10. Fighting: 10.

TIPS (spoiler-free)
-------------------
- Watch the clock in the HUD: during the break you are told which
room your next class is in. Be there and sit down (S) in time.
- Don't run or jump where a teacher can see you.
- Some classmates may help you if you stay close to them. Read
  their speech bubbles carefully.
- Check your Notes (N) often: they remember what you have found.
- Patience is a virtue... especially near the headmaster's office.

AI ASSISTANCE (honest disclosure)
---------------------------------
- The cover art was made with AI.
- The game was developed by Marcelo Licari with the help of AI
assistants: AI agents helped write and build the Z80 code and
tools, and an AI ("Lisa") gave design feedback during planning.
- The school map was generated with code (Python), without AI image
generation. Design, story and final decisions: Marcelo Licari.

Versión 1.0.0 (1/11/2026)

QUÉ ES
------

Strickland. Dos finales distintos.

HOMENAJE A SKOOL DAZE
---------------------
OFICIAL y SIN FINES DE LUCRO.

----
1 Personaje (elegí alumno y escribí un nombre: letras, 0 = borrar,
  ENTER = OK)   2 Controles   3 Idioma (inglés/español)

---------
  O / P izquierda / derecha
  Q / A subir / bajar escaleras
  ESPACIO correr

  G ver objetivos

    expulsa.

AMONESTACIONES (algunas)
------------------------
Saltar en clase delante del profe: 5. Correr delante de un profe: 5.
No sentarte en clase: 5. Estar fuera de clase o faltar: 10.
Pelear: 10.

CONSEJOS (sin spoilers)
-----------------------
Llegá y sentate (S) a tiempo.

  Licari.
